Croatia Adoption Program
Adoption Center of Illinois at Family Resource Center (ACI) is pleased to announce that we have received authorization from Croatia’s Adoption Authority – The Ministry for Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy – to work with the Republic of Croatia in the field of intercountry adoption.
ACI is a 501(c)(3) non-profit Hague-accredited licensed child welfare agency. ACI was founded in 1988 and our mission has remained the same: Helping children through adoption. Since 1988, we have provided services to thousands of families. Please note that our Hague Accreditation is under our DCFS legal name: Family Resource Center. ACI has over 29 years of experience facilitating intercountry adoption.
Eligibility Requirements and Fees
In addition to U.S. citizenship, prospective adoptive parents need to meet the following requirements in order to adopt a child from Croatia:
Age of Adopting Parents: Must be at least 21 years old and at least 18 years older than the adoptee.
Marriage: A child can be adopted by a heterosexual married couple or a single individual.
Other requirements: A child cannot be adopted by persons deprived of parental rights or legal capacity and persons whose previous behavior and personal characteristics indicate that they are not suitable to be entrusted with parental child care.
Fees: Estimated total fees to adopt a child from Croatia will range from $22,000 to $30,000.
Croatia has indicated that children eligible for adoption are generally older than seven (7) years of age, siblings adopted together, children with developmental difficulties and Roma children.
Child profiles that were provided to ACI have included children ranging in age from 5 to 17. Some of these children had special needs including developmental disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and physical disabilities/medical problems. Most of the children appeared to reside in foster homes but some resided in institutional care facilities. If approved to adopt, the Ministry for Demography, Family, Youth and Social Policy will match families with an available child.
