Parenting in SPACE Training Session presented by Billy Kaplan
This six hour workshop helps parents to understand how the earliest moments in children’s lives, prenatally through the age of three, are critical for the brain to complete its “wiring” process. When brain development is held back by neglect or trauma, the way the brain is affected during that time may disrupt children’s abilities to connect with others and cause a host of challenging behaviors. Children and youth with attachment- and trauma-related behaviors don’t usually respond well to traditional parenting techniques like rewards & punishments and sticker charts. In this workshop, Billy Kaplan, LCSW, will help us understand children’s behaviors in new ways, and he’ll help us learn new approaches for reaching kids using the skills of therapeutic parenting.
Billy Kaplan is the President and Clinical Director of House Calls Counseling, Chicagoland’s premier provider of attachment-focused, trauma-informed psychotherapy to individuals, couples and families in the comfort of the home. He is currently also a Clinical Consultant of Kaleidoscope, Inc., a child welfare agency. He earned a Master of Social Work from Yeshiva University, the Wurzweiler School of Social Work. He has held positions in foster care, residential, and counseling programs. He has presented workshops locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. He is the co-producer of an educational DVD entitled “Chaos to Healing: Therapeutic Parenting 101.
